This is going to sound a little dumb to some of you, but there are a lot of people who'd like to hike a trail or climb a mountain, but don't know exactly what to do or where to go. A great way to get started is through your local chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club. Local chapters like the one in Albany organize outings lead by experienced people who like to share their knowledge of the trail. The hikes are rated by difficulty, so you don't have to worry too much about getting in over your head right away. It costs $50 to become a member, but considering the doors this can open, that's not much money.

Maybe you've heard people claim that the best Italian bread or bagels can only be made in New York City. Why? Because of the water. Well, New York City water snobs can rack one up in their column this week after beating out 150 other municipalities in the 2008 New York State Water Taste Test. Finals were staged at the New York State fair yesterday, where the top ten faced off in a closely contested water taste-off . And how exactly do you cleanse your palate after tasting water, anyway? By drinking some wine? Among the top contenders was last year's winner Albany, but honestly, what we're really curious about is to see the list of the state's worst tasting water. |

For the second year in a row, Stewart's has been named as having New York's best milk. The award was announced at the State Fair yesterday by Dr. Kathryn Boor, who heads Cornell's Milk Quality Improvement Program. And this was no simple taste test. Naming the best in New York takes a year of lab analysis involving hundreds of milk samples and thousands of tests to determine quality and purity. That makes three out of the last four years that Stewart's has walked off with top honors; maybe we should all celebrate with a box of Oreos and a quart of high-test.

The Saratogian says that the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company has been scolded by the state liquor authority for offering beer samples way above the size allowed by law. Apparently, some obscure regulation says that samples can be no more than 3 ounces. The brewery has been offering up 16 ounce samples in their tasting room served in a souvenir pint glass ---all for $4. But don't worry, beer lovers: you can still tour the brewery, and hey, five or six of those samples and you're right back up around 16 ounces, aren't you?

If you look at HVCC's slate of credit-free courses this fall, you'll find all sorts of things to enrich you life: yoga, guitar classes, Chinese lessons, UFO Studies... UFO Studies? That's right, under "Recreation & Hobbies" the community college is offering a six session course in what they call UFO-ology, which will "examine why we are being visited, what they are doing here, and what we can do about it." What we can do about it? That sounds very "Men In Black." The offbeat course offerings don't end there: you can also sign up for Everything You Wanted to Know About Ghosts…But Were too Spooked to Ask or Witches, Ghosts & Hauntings ---and for the more lighthearted, there's Advanced Clowning. No, Clowning 101 is not listed as a prerequisite.

In case you haven't noticed, trivia's really huge right now ---in fact, there's hardly a night that you can't find a team trivia event at a local bar. Thursday, trivia gets out of the watering holes and down to the track as Time Warner hosts Trivia Thursday in the backyard at Saratoga. Regsiter between noon and 3pm at the Time Warner tent near the Big Red Spring; the contest starts at 3:00. Winners can walk away with big prizes like ...uhhhh...t-shirts ---however, the team with the highest meet-long score gets a big party and a race named after them. Who knows? Maybe one victory could put you on top of the heap.

In case any parents out there were worried about sending their daughters away for college, here's something that should make you feel better: The Coliseum, a popular nightspot among UAlbany students, is hosting a "Girls Kissing Girls" conest tonight. We were unable to find a web site for the bar or any official rules, but we did come up with a Facebook page. We were also unable to confirm if Kristi Gustafson will make an appearance withe the Night Cam. Now that would be a popular video...

The Union Street Bed and Breakfast -which raised the ire of its neighbors for for hosting sex parties- is slated to be sold to an area doctor who will covert the house into office space for his psychiatry practice. At auction yesterday the property sold for $180,000 ---about $100,000 more than swing-meister Bob Alexson paid for the place in 2001. Not bad. According to the TU, the purchase is for the house and its contents, which include "A private 'dungeon' sex room on a section of uneven concrete floor,
decorated with strings of red lights and filled with assorted benches,
seats and frames, some with rings that could be used to hold restraints." All that's missing is a ping pong table. |

If anybody's going to see John Mayer at SPAC tonight, we'd be really interested in hearing from you tomorrow. A while back, 518 Living suggested that the show would be an estrogen fueled chick-fest ---sort of the concert equivalent to seeing the "Sex In The City" movie. No guys would willingly go to this show, unless they're David Paterson, so we'd like to get a read on tonight's crowd: do the men in attendance look like they were coerced in any way, or that some form of extortion was employed to make them attend? And if you're a man, what did it take to make you go? Send us an email at

Today's Weather
-
First Warning Forecast
A few high clouds from what was Tropical Storm Fay will continue to spread into the skies overnight and tomorrow, but we will still stay dry. Temps tonight will be on the cool side again, but despite a few more clouds around tomorrow, the sun will still warm us into the middle and upper 70s.
For Friday, clouds will thicken and lower a bit...in fact, Friday will wind up a cloudy day. This could produce a few scattered sprinkles or showers but most of the day will be dry.
The next front will make an approach late Friday into early Saturday. This front will bring us a shot at a few showers or a thunderstorm in the first half of the day. From there, skies will clear out and we'll see a beautiful rest of the Labor Day weekend.
Have a great night-
Jason Gough
