Back in late June we posted this link for BestParking.com, a web site that will show you parking garages in Manhattan and give you a price. Some garages will even give you a printout with a guaranteed rate. Since this is a huge time for people to head down to the city, this site is an essential tool if you're driving. You may be saying, "Yikes! Doesn't it cost a fortune to park in Manhattan?" The short answer is no, and if you check the interactive rate-calculating map, we guarantee you'll be amazed at hoe cheaply you can park.

If we say "director chair," you know exactly what we're talking about, right? For that you can thank Henry "Hank" Vanderminden III, patriarch of the family that runs Telescope Furniture in Granville. Vanderminden passed away this week, but may be best remembered for dubbing his company's ubiquitous folding, wood and canvas chairs as "director chairs." Telescope still manufactures the chairs, and just as movies made in Hollywood are one of America's great exports, the Telescope director chair is still made in the U.S.A.

Video games are bad for kids. How many times have you heard that one? Well, now thanks to games that make you get up and be part of the action people are starting to look past the slack-jawed-eyes-glazed-lazy-teenager stereotype that many people associate with gaming. Here's a perfect example of the new face of video games that we found on the TU's Parenting blog: a family getting the kids tuckered out before bedtime by playing Rock Band together. How cute are those kids. You'll notice in the picture that dad has a hard time letting go of lead guitar duty, but give him some time. He'll learn to share. |

Here's the perfect thing to bring to your sister's house on turkey day: humorous cups printed with pictures of other people's noses. No, you may not be able to pick your relatives, but if you search through the cup selection, you may be able to pick your dad's nose, your uncle's nose, or even your mother-in-law's nose. At $9.95 plus shipping, it's worth every penny considering the fun you'll have. There are 24 cups included, but you might want to buy two sets; you don't want people picking their noses and then swapping cups. That would be unsanitary. |

Yes, watched ---by a 41-year-old woman who is not his mother. But now that we have your attention, we should probably explain that he's enrolled in an SAT prep course conducted by an online tutor. In a brilliant nexus of remote learning and personal attention, Torcivia is getting ready for the SAT's by taking an online class that's closely monitored by tutors employed Wilson Daily Prep. Nick and his mother were featured in a recent NY Times story that explains how in an age of over-scheduled electronics-addicted kids, services like this may be a good solution for squeezing in one more thing. But if they slack off? Then mom and dad get a call from the teacher, just like at real school.

When 518 Living told you about the local bus companies offering to take you to Washington for the Obama inauguration, we had no idea that there were no guarantees about getting you close to the festivities. In a front page story in today's TU, Kristi Gustafson tells us that Wade Tours thinks it will be dropping people off in Baltimore, where they can then take the commuter train to DC. Hopefully. She also writes that Senator Chuck Schumer is giving away 350 inauguration tickets at his website. Those signing up will be entered into a lottery held on December 5. In one of the more interesting inauguration bus deals, Yankee Trails is combining the trip with a visit to Amish Country. That must be to show how the more things change the more they stay the same.

Today is the 32nd annual Great American Smokeout, the day the American Cancer Society urges you give up the butts. When you think about it, it wasn't that long ago when you could smoke in places you wouldn't imagine lighting up today: movie theatres, hospitals, airplanes ---pretty much anywhere. These days it's pretty much limited to home, your car, or standing outside at work. All this in less than a generation. We'd like to remind you again that there a lot of free resources available to get you started; just go to the state's Smokers' Quitsite to take the first step ---and the last puff.

Tickets are still available to see Arlo Guthrie tonight at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. This is not Guthrie's first Thanksgiving season concert at the venue and hopefully it won't be his last, but as usual you can expect to hear he song that's as much a part of Thanksgiving as mashed potatoes: Alice's Restaurant. The 18-plus minute classic (formally titled Alice's Restaurant Massacree) was released in 1967, but when performing live, Guthrie usually spruces up the lyrics with some topical content. there's no shortage of that this year. As for the real restaurant in the song, it was operated for years as Theresa's Stockbridge Cafe but is now closed ---but when in Stockbridge you can visit the adjoining Main Street Cafe; you can't get anything you want there, but you can probably find breakfast or a sandwich. |

Happy Birthday, Blanche Wilelm! You've made it to 82-years-old, which is quite an accomplishment ---but what's the best way to celebrate? Brunch at the Gideon-Putnam? Bus trip to Turning Stone? No, here's something much better: Blanche's three devoted sons took her to Bombers Burritos on Lark Street for the giant Bombers Birthday Margarita. Mmmmmm....nothing says happy birthday like a quart of frosty margarita goodness served in a giant cup! It's free on your birthday when you spend $15 or more, so be sure to put Bombers on your birthday agenda.

Today's Weather
-
First Warning Forecast
The weekend looks dry and cold outside of the lake effect snows. Saturday will be the coldest day with highs only near 30. With a gusty wind it will feel colder throughout the day..wind chills in the teens. Sunday the wind will relax a bit. This, combined with highs back in the mid 30s will make it feel more comfortable...although still chilly and a good 10 degrees below average.
There is the potential for some snow or a snow-rain mix early next week as a more potent storm approaches from the west. Right now it looks like the best chance for some light snow and rain will be Monday night into Tuesday. Currently, our computer models are leaning away from a major snow but we'll continue to track this through the weekend.
Have a great weekend!
