Dear John E-mail
Monday, 25 August 2008
MayerIf anybody's going to see John Mayer at SPAC tonight, we'd be really interested in hearing from you tomorrow. A while back, 518 Living suggested that the show would be an estrogen fueled chick-fest ---sort of the concert equivalent to seeing the "Sex In The City" movie. No guys would willingly go to this show, unless they're David Paterson, so we'd like to get a read on tonight's crowd: do the men in attendance look like they were coerced in any way, or that some form of extortion was employed to make them attend? And if you're a man, what did it take to make you go? Send us an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Stretch This E-mail
Monday, 25 August 2008

CurlinIn the media this week, "Saratoga" and "homestretch" will occur in the same sentence more than any other combination of words in common usage. Yes, it's the homestretch at Saratoga, and for those you unfamiliar with horse racing terminology or overused clichés, that means it's almost over. If you haven't been to the track this summer, it's time to seriously consider getting off your keister and enjoying the area's only world class sporting  event ---and just because the Travers is over, doesn't mean the excitement has finished: everybody's going nuts this week over Saturday's appearance of Curlin at the $500,000 Woodward Stakes. To race fans, this is like Michael Phelps strapping on horseshoes and getting into the starting gate, so don't miss it.

USS SlaterThe USS Slater remains closed this week as film crews continue work on the Japanese-produced feature, "Orion In Midsummer." Speaking of midsummer, it might seem like bad timing to shut down a major tourist attraction for two weeks in the middle of August, right? As it turns out, what's bad for visitors is good for the Slater's Destroyer Escort Historical Museum. According to the Troy Record, the organization is receiving "about $100,000" for the use of the ship as a filming location. That's probably more than they could make on the admission fees they collect. At $7 a head, they'd need more than 14,000 visitors to make that kind of money.

Up and Comers E-mail

Just as the Kronos Quartet once shook up the classical music world, all the buzz these days seems to be for, Time For Three. The genre bending twenty-something trio are just as comfortable with Brahms as they are with bluegrass. They play two shows in Saratoga this weekend, Saturday evening with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and a solo performance on Sunday afternoon at the Spa Little Theatre. The Sunday show should be a treat ---and it starts at 2:15 so you should have time to get out of town before Sunday evening's Journey show at SPAC.

Travers Day E-mail
Thursday, 21 August 2008
TraversIt's the biggest event of the biggest thing we have around here: Travers Day. Expect a ginormous crowd at the track Saturday, which means one thing: think early. Leave home early, park early, grab your spot early. Early, early, early. Did we mention that you should do everything early? To facilitate your earliness, the track will open at 7am Saturday. The other big difference on Travers Day is that they'll charge you to go into the clubhouse during breakfast ---and Saturday's clubhouse admission is doubled to $10. Hey: $10 for a major sporting event? That's a bargain. Regarding parking, maybe a good strategy is park far away instead of close ---that way you might duck some of the traffic at the end of the day.
