This is going to sound a little dumb to some of you, but there are a lot of people who'd like to hike a trail or climb a mountain, but don't know exactly what to do or where to go. A great way to get started is through your local chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club. Local chapters like the one in Albany organize outings lead by experienced people who like to share their knowledge of the trail. The hikes are rated by difficulty, so you don't have to worry too much about getting in over your head right away. It costs $50 to become a member, but considering the doors this can open, that's not much money.

In case you haven't noticed, trivia's really huge right now ---in fact, there's hardly a night that you can't find a team trivia event at a local bar. Thursday, trivia gets out of the watering holes and down to the track as Time Warner hosts Trivia Thursday in the backyard at Saratoga. Regsiter between noon and 3pm at the Time Warner tent near the Big Red Spring; the contest starts at 3:00. Winners can walk away with big prizes like ...uhhhh...t-shirts ---however, the team with the highest meet-long score gets a big party and a race named after them. Who knows? Maybe one victory could put you on top of the heap.

Maybe you've heard people claim that the best Italian bread or bagels can only be made in New York City. Why? Because of the water. Well, New York City water snobs can rack one up in their column this week after beating out 150 other municipalities in the 2008 New York State Water Taste Test. Finals were staged at the New York State fair yesterday, where the top ten faced off in a closely contested water taste-off . And how exactly do you cleanse your palate after tasting water, anyway? By drinking some wine? Among the top contenders was last year's winner Albany, but honestly, what we're really curious about is to see the list of the state's worst tasting water. |

For the second year in a row, Stewart's has been named as having New York's best milk. The award was announced at the State Fair yesterday by Dr. Kathryn Boor, who heads Cornell's Milk Quality Improvement Program. And this was no simple taste test. Naming the best in New York takes a year of lab analysis involving hundreds of milk samples and thousands of tests to determine quality and purity. That makes three out of the last four years that Stewart's has walked off with top honors; maybe we should all celebrate with a box of Oreos and a quart of high-test.

The Saratogian says that the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company has been scolded by the state liquor authority for offering beer samples way above the size allowed by law. Apparently, some obscure regulation says that samples can be no more than 3 ounces. The brewery has been offering up 16 ounce samples in their tasting room served in a souvenir pint glass ---all for $4. But don't worry, beer lovers: you can still tour the brewery, and hey, five or six of those samples and you're right back up around 16 ounces, aren't you?
