Fair Days E-mail
Monday, 18 August 2008

Fair DaysLate August means that we're hot and heavy into county fair season. Whoa ---did we just say "late August?" Anyhow, the Washington County Fair kicks off today in Greenwich on Route 29.  Along with the usual fair attractions of rides and greasy food, expect lots of down home music and daily truck and tractor pulls. If you like big vehicles that make a lot of noise, this is for you. Friday night is the fair's annual rooster crowing contest. We're not sure if that's humans doing rooster calls or roosters doing rooster calls; we'll let you know.

MEGA WEDGIEIt's Heroes Week at the Great Escape and they have a special deal through Friday August 15  for military personnel, teachers, police officers, fire department, nurses and EMS personnel: show your ID at the gate and get in free if you're with a paying customer. To sweeten the deal, the paying customer gets $10 bucks off admission. Nice! The heroes may want to try something truly heroic: the Mega Wedgie. We really like that they've named a ride after something that involves having your underwear jammed up your...well, you get the idea.

Rescue Me E-mail

Shocking! Are you ready to respond in an emergency? Being prepared for the unexpected can bring great peace of mind, and the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York can help you. They teach CPR, defibrillator use, responding to emergencies ---they even have a babysitting class that includes instruction on handling an obstructed airway, accident prevention, and dealing with illness. Here's some outside the box thinking: how about one of these classes as a gift for someone? Actually, if it's a gift, isn't that inside the box? You get the idea.

Tyler Purvis-Mitchell Rocks! E-mail
Thursday, 26 June 2008
TylerWho rocks? Tyler Purvis-Mitchell, that's who! He's the quick thinking 14-year-old who snatched a five-day-old baby out from under the wheels of a CDTA bus last month; since then he's been congratulated by everyone from Jerry Jennings to the State Assembly. Yesterday he was honored by CDTA for saving the day, and rightly so: imagine the bad publicity had that bus run over the baby. Yikes! The nice thing about Tyler is he didn't let this go to his head. He told the newspaper, "I just saw the baby where it should not have been. I don't feel like a hero, I just did not want to see him run over by the tires."

Forgotten Albany E-mail
Monday, 23 June 2008
Old AlbanySt. Patrick's Day is huge in Albany ---but there was a time when being Irish in the city wasn't a source of pride, it was a point of derision. A new exhibit at the State Museum examines life in 1800's Sheridan Hollow, the slum where the newly arrived Irish lived in squalid, ramshackle shanties. At the heart of the display is what the people left behind, uncovered by archaeological digs in 2004 and 2005. Paul Grondahl writes about the exhibit in today's TU ---you can see it for yourself every day at the museum until October 15.
