Got Great Milk? E-mail
Tuesday, 26 August 2008

Yay!For the second year in a row, Stewart's has been named as having New York's best milk. The award was announced at the State Fair yesterday by Dr. Kathryn Boor, who heads Cornell's Milk Quality Improvement Program. And this was no simple taste test. Naming the best in New York takes a year of lab analysis involving hundreds of milk samples and thousands of tests to determine quality and purity. That makes three out of the last four years that Stewart's has walked off with top honors; maybe we should all celebrate with a box of Oreos and a quart of high-test.

Saratoga BrewingThe Saratogian says that the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company has been scolded by the state liquor authority for offering beer samples way above the size allowed by law. Apparently, some obscure regulation says that samples can be no more than 3 ounces. The brewery has been offering up 16 ounce samples in their tasting room served in a souvenir pint glass ---all for $4. But don't worry, beer lovers: you can still tour the brewery, and hey, five or six of those samples and you're right back up around 16 ounces, aren't you?

Ice Cream Eating ContestAnd most of the screaming yesterday was due to raging, head-splitting cases of brain freeze as contestants in the Stewart's ice cream eating contest fought to see who could down a pint the fastest. Winner in the teen category, Kristina Rosenberger, told CapitalNews 9 she was doing fine, but "My braces started to freeze though, so my mouth was kind of cold. It was bad." See some pictures next...

Ice CreamMaybe stuffing hot dogs down your throat is not something that sounds like a good time ---then how about sucking down mass quantities of ice cream? For the second time this week, competitive eating is a backyard attraction at the track as Stewart's sponsors an ice cream eating contest. Contestants will be classed by age (kids, teens, adults) and registration starts at 1pm near the jockey silks room; kick-off time is after the third race. Here's a tip: don't drink too much soda or beer before you do this or you may inspire a new flavor name: Mt. Vesuvius swirl.

Dogs"You blow, you go!" That was the last word of warning Michael Castellano, of the International Federation of Competetive Eating, gave participants in Monday's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest at the track. The winner was "Buffalo Jim" Reeves, who ate 23.5 hot dogs in just 10 minutes. He did not blow, did not go, and he walked away with a one year supply of hot dogs. The throng of media covering the event enjoyed the leftovers. See a bunch of pictures after the jump...
