ADKThis is going to sound a little dumb to some of you, but there are a lot of people who'd like to hike a trail or climb a mountain, but don't know exactly what to do or where to go. A great way to get started is through your local chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club. Local chapters like the one in Albany organize outings lead by experienced people who like to share their knowledge of the trail. The hikes are rated by difficulty, so you don't have to worry too much about getting in over your head right away. It costs $50 to become a member, but considering the doors this can open, that's not much money.

hikeYou've heard of fundraising walks and runs, but fundraising hikes? The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Upstate NY/Vermont's Hike For Discovery is a great way to learn a new sport and help a great cause at the same time. Participants receive professional training and fundraising support ---and a great opportunity to be part of a team. There's an information meeting Wednesday 8/13 at 5:30 at The Crossings of Colonie; look for them in the south pavilion.

Deadly ShroomsLast week we told to lay off the tomalley (yech!), well now the New York State Health Department is cautioning folks not to eat mushrooms they find out in the wild. This comes after a man in Westchester County died and two people in Rensselaer County were hospitalized after consuming the destroying angel mushrooms. According to DOH, the deadly fungi can cause "abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, liver damage, and even death." The destroying angel -also known as the death angel- are commonly mistaken for safe, common wild mushrooms like the button mushroom and meadow mushroom. Short version: buy your mushrooms at the store.

Spa CityTuesdays are dark at the track, which means it's bound to be a big day at the Roosevelt Baths. You can go for a 40 minute soak for as little as $25 ---or choose from a long list of massage and beauty treatment. What's the big deal with the bubbly water? It says on the web site, "Using the mineral springs can have physical benefits and psychological benefits, reducing stress and strengthening the body's overall functioning." Who among us couldn't use a little of that?

TriathlonGood news: you can still get yourself entered in this year's North Country Triathlon ---but we don't really recommend this unless you are, you know, a triathlete. The race includes a 750 meter swim, a 20K bike ride, and a 5K run ---or you can compete at the Olympic distances, which are twice as far. For those unfamiliar with triathlons, these events are to be done consecutively. Yes, right after one another. On the same day. That said, if you've got what it takes (and a bicycle) get registered by Friday. You can do it online or on Friday at the Silver Bay YMCA between 5:00 and 8:00pm.
