This is going to sound a little dumb to some of you, but there are a lot of people who'd like to hike a trail or climb a mountain, but don't know exactly what to do or where to go. A great way to get started is through your local chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club. Local chapters like the one in Albany organize outings lead by experienced people who like to share their knowledge of the trail. The hikes are rated by difficulty, so you don't have to worry too much about getting in over your head right away. It costs $50 to become a member, but considering the doors this can open, that's not much money.
